The OPINCHARGE project took the stage at the 4th Annual Battery 2030+ Conference, held on 6–7 May 2025 in Münster, Germany. Represented by project partner Prof. Hans-Georg Steinrück from FZ Jülich, OPINCHARGE joined forces with two sister projects – ULTRABAT and OPERA. Jointly, they highlighted their complementary contributions to advancing battery interface research.
Bridging Efforts for a Holistic Battery Future
The session, titled “ULTRABAT – OPERA – OPINCHARGE,” focused on the synergies among the three projects in pushing the frontiers of battery research. According to Hans-Georg, the central message was clear: “Complementarity between ULTRABAT, OPERA, and OPINCHARGE towards holistically understanding battery interfaces coupled to their performance.”
This holistic approach is central to OPINCHARGE’s mission: innovating operando techniques to understand the chemical and structural changes occurring at battery interfaces in real time, and at unprecedented nanoscale resolution. This knowledge is key to developing longer-lasting and safer lithium-ion batteries.
From Fundamental Science to Real-World Impact
Hans-Georg noted that OPINCHARGE is helping solve a major challenge in the battery research landscape – deepening the fundamental understanding of the processes taking place inside batteries. This contributes directly to Europe’s battery innovation strategy by enabling theory-guided experimental methodologies that improve performance prediction, interface stability, and battery lifetime.
Asked about the potential benefits for stakeholders and end users, Hans-Georg underlined the acceleration of developing stable chemistries tailored for specific applications – from electric vehicles to stationary storage.
One particularly innovative aspect of the project? Investigating the voltage-dependent dynamic behaviour of the solid electrolyte interphase – a complex phenomenon that significantly affects battery ageing and safety.
Conference Highlights
Held at the historic Münster Palace, the Battery 2030+ conference brought together leading researchers, industry stakeholders, and early-career scientists to explore the future of battery technology. The event featured keynote lectures, poster sessions, site visits to top research centres, and valuable networking opportunities.
Reflecting on the experience, Hans-Georg shared a simple but powerful takeaway: “It is important to work on challenging problems and accept failure.” This mindset mirrors the high-risk, high-reward nature of cutting-edge battery innovation that OPINCHARGE embraces.
