OPINCHARGE research recognised in Electrochimica Acta Editor’s Choice 2025

A scientific publication developed with contributions from the OPINCHARGE project has been selected as part of the Electrochimica Acta Editor’s Choice 2025 collection.
The article is listed as No. 31 among selected papers recognised for originality, scientific rigor, and impact on electrochemistry and energy storage research.
The paper is titled: “Operando visualization of Li distribution in solid-state batteries using focused ion beam–secondary ion mass spectrometry imaging.”

The study introduces an advanced operando imaging approach that enables real-time visualisation of lithium distribution in solid-state batteries during operation.
Such capabilities are essential for understanding ion transport pathways and interface dynamics that influence battery performance, safety, and lifetime.

Why this research matters

Solid-state batteries are considered a key technology for next-generation energy storage systems. However, many internal electrochemical processes remain difficult to observe under real operating conditions.

The selected study combines secondary electron imaging with secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). This approach allows researchers to monitor transient changes in lithium distribution while the battery is operating. It provides direct insight into ion transport mechanisms and interfacial behaviour in solid-state systems.

These insights support the design of safer, more efficient, and more reliable battery technologies. They also contribute to strengthening Europe’s leadership in advanced battery research and operando characterisation methods.

Authors and contributing institutions

The publication brings together expertise from leading European research organisations and OPINCHARGE partners.

The study was led by Sayantan Sharma together with Mathieu Gerard, Alexander Santiago, Athira Suresh Kumar, Tom Wirtz, Santhana Eswara and Olivier De Castro from the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST).

Further contributions were provided by María Martínez-Ibáñez from the Basque Research and Technology Alliance (BRTA) and CIC energiGUNE.

About the recognition

Editor’s Choice articles in Electrochimica Acta are selected annually by the editorial team to highlight publications with outstanding scientific quality and relevance.
The collection showcases innovative research across electrochemistry, materials science, and energy storage.

Being included in this selection underlines the relevance of OPINCHARGE research in advancing operando methodologies and next-generation battery technologies.
