As OPINCHARGE entered its advanced research phase, Newsletter #3 captured a defining element of the project’s identity — its strong commitment to Open Science, Open Access, and responsible research.
This third edition highlighted how OPINCHARGE ensures that scientific knowledge is shared openly, transparently, and efficiently with the scientific community, industry, policymakers, and the public.
Newsletter #3 placed Open Science at the very heart of OPINCHARGE’s mission. The consortium reaffirmed its commitment to:
Full and immediate Open Access to all peer-reviewed publications
Application of the FAIR Data Principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Re-usable)
Implementation of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) methodologies
By embedding these principles throughout the entire research lifecycle, OPINCHARGE ensures that its results are not only scientifically robust, but also widely accessible, reusable, and societally relevant.
Early sharing of results and active knowledge transfer among stakeholders were also emphasized as key drivers for accelerating innovation, improving reproducibility, and reducing time-to-market for battery-based solutions.
A major highlight of Newsletter #3 was OPINCHARGE’s participation in the 4th Annual Battery 2030+ Conference, held on 6–7 May 2025 in Münster, Germany.
Represented by Prof. Hans-Georg Steinrück (FZ Jülich), OPINCHARGE joined forces with sister projects ULTRABAT and OPERA to showcase complementary approaches to advanced battery interface research within the European framework.
The joint presence underlined the strong integration of OPINCHARGE within the Battery2030+ ecosystem and Europe’s long-term battery research strategy.
Newsletter #3 also reflected on the successful OPINCHARGE workshop held on 3–4 April 2025 at the University of Córdoba. The event brought together leading researchers, engineers, and innovators to discuss:
Advanced characterization techniques
Multiscale modelling approaches
Multiphysics interactions at electrode–electrolyte interfaces
The workshop provided an important platform for in-depth scientific exchange on topics that are critical to the performance and lifetime of rechargeable batteries, and further strengthened collaboration between academia and research centres across Europe.
Another key feature of Newsletter #3 was the presentation of new Open Access research articles, including work on:
Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy
Voltage relaxation in silicon nanoparticles
Transition-metal dissolution and cross-contamination
Chemo-mechanical simulations of silicon nanowires and SEI formation
These publications further demonstrated OPINCHARGE’s consistent output in high-quality, openly accessible battery interface research.
All publications and dissemination materials are available in the OPINCHARGE Media Corner.
Newsletter #3 once again highlighted OPINCHARGE’s close ties to key European initiatives such as:
Battery2030+, shaping the future of European battery research
BEPA – Batteries European Partnership Association, linking research and industry under Horizon Europe
These networks continue to play a central role in ensuring that OPINCHARGE contributes meaningfully to the development of a competitive and sustainable European battery value chain.
Looking back today, Newsletter #3 stands as a clear statement of OPINCHARGE’s dedication to Open Science in Action. It reflects a project that not only delivers scientific excellence, but also ensures that knowledge is shared responsibly, openly, and with long-term societal impact in mind.
After documenting strong momentum in Newsletter #2, OPINCHARGE is already preparing the fourth project newsletter. It will bring together the latest results, exploitation highlights, and a look ahead as the project reaches its conclusion.
About OPINCHARGE
Funded by Horizon Europe projects OPINCHARGE is a multidisciplinary research project unlocking the potential of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) through cutting-edge science and innovation.
OPINCHARGE started on the 1st of June 2023 with the participation of 10 partners from 7 countries, led by LUXEMBOURG INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (LIST).
