Launching the Webinar Series “Time and Length-Scale Operando Bridging Techniques to Study Battery Interfaces”

Join us online on 23 October 2025 at 15:00 CET for the launch of a new webinar series exploring how cutting-edge operando techniques are helping researchers see inside batteries — and understand the complex transformations that define their performance and lifetime.

Our project, together with OPERA and ULTRABAT, is introducing this initiative under the framework of Battery2030+. The series, titled “Time and Length-Scale Operando Bridging Techniques to Study Battery Interfaces,” is designed to familiarise scientists with experimental methods that make it possible to study interfacial processes in real time.

Understanding Battery Interfaces Across Scales

Battery interfaces are where essential electrochemical reactions occur—and where the keys to efficiency, durability, and safety lie. Yet observing these regions as batteries operate is one of the most challenging tasks in materials science. Operando characterisation techniques provide a solution, allowing researchers to track structural and chemical changes as they happen and to connect findings across different time and length scales.

Each webinar in the series combines two complementary elements: a concise tutorial introducing one or several techniques, followed by a research presentation that demonstrates their practical use in recent studies, with time for discussion.

First Webinar: SAXS/WAXS Techniques

The opening session will feature Sandrine Lyonnard from CEA Grenoble (SyMMES), presenting “SAXS/WAXS Techniques for 1D, 2D, and 3D Mapping of Structural Changes in Battery Materials.”

Her talk will show how Small- and Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS/WAXS) reveals how materials evolve inside working batteries—from nanoscale to macroscale—offering new perspectives on degradation mechanisms and guiding the design of improved electrode architectures.

Building Collaboration Through Knowledge

This webinar series represents a joint effort by OPINCHARGE, OPERA, and ULTRABAT to bring together Europe’s battery research community around advanced characterisation methods, strengthen collaboration, and accelerate innovation in interface science
